Christmas Minis

As we all know, pictures make the perfect gift! I will be at May's Memorial Baptist Church this Saturday with a mini photo booth set up (Christmas background) and will be offering instant 4"x6" pictures for $5.00 each - all of the proceeds will be going to May's Memorial's WMU mission's projects. I will also be offering studio minis (Christmas backdrop) on Saturday, November 29. There will be a very limited amount of sessions available and this will be my only mini session before Christmas, so contact me today to schedule your session!

This is why I do... what I do!

We just finished up the annual PPMA (Professional Photographer's of Mississippi/Alabama) fall conference at Joe Wheeler State Park. I always enjoy the fellowship with my photographer friends, "talking shop", advancing my skills and knowledge to better serve my customers, etc., but this year, Michael Taylor and Monica Sigmon were the speakers and Michael showed us a film by Kodak that was put out a few years ago. It truly reminded me why I do, what I do! It literally brought tears to my eyes! It wasn't even that long of a film (maybe 5-10 minutes), but the part where the older man was looking at a picture of an older woman... MAN! Kodak didn't need to tell me that he was a husband missing his deceased wife and that THAT picture was his connection to her. THAT! That is why I do this! THAT is why I love my job! I have always loved photography, I knew at 9 years old that I wanted to be a photographer, but more than that - I've always loved pictures. I LOVE looking through old pictures - not even of just my family, even that of strangers - I love that photographs capture that moment in time - it shows the clothes, the cars, the hairstyles of that era, but it often times shows even more - it shows personality, relationships, sometimes even how clean (or not) your house was! I love the digital age - the instant gratification of seeing your images, being able to share with the push of a button with friends and family all over the world, but it also makes me sad. Most of my clients don't get digital because they know when you hire a professional photographer it's like hiring a baker; you are hiring a professional to do the job. In the same way that you wouldn't go to a baker and just buy the ingredients to make a cake yourself - you hire a professional photographer to finish the job - print the prints through a professional printing company (not Wal-Mart) that is going to withstand the test of time, greens look green and reds look red, the cropping is done in a way that is pleasing to the eye and the subject, the paper is coated with UV protection so that it doesn't fade, etc., but so many times I see photographers only selling digital - or even when some of my clients do want digital - I wonder if the pictures ever even get printed - or if they do, what does the end result look like. Not even with just professional prints, but the ones we are taking every day - we capture now days ever single detail of our children's lives - from first steps to first day of school, to high school graduation - but how many of those are we actually printing (I'm even guilty of this myself!). This is one of my favorite pictures (and it's a scan from another family member that had copied it from another family member) - its of my Grandmother and her family. My Grandmother died when I was very young, and I don't have a lot of memories of her because I was so young, I never even met her parents, but through this picture, I feel a connection with them - I can see me in them - I know from the looks of this picture - and through the stories I have heard - that this picture was a big deal - they saved up their money, went to a professional photographer, dressed in their best clothes - to preserve this memory of their family. I do know there was a few kids that came along after the picture and that my Great-Grandfather didn't live too much past this picture, but what a memory that not only they had, but that generations to come have had off of this. That is exactly what I want for my clients - I want them to look back on their pictures years from now and say "I remember this session - I remember going to buy that special outfit, I remember that was our first home that we hung it in, we had so much fun that day". I want to put the special memories back into photography. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with digital and sharing and printing our own prints, but I do think there are special times that we need to preserve our family portraits, get them professionally printed and hang them on the wall so that some day our great-great grandchildren are in their flying cars looking at whatever their form of social media will be and seeing the scan of a scan of a picture that I took. That's why I do, what I do, and I am HONORED to those of you that chose ME to be the one to preserve your family memories!

Special Days...

It has been a busy summer at Southern Exposure Photography for weddings and fall is shaping up to be just as filled! Yesterday I had the honor and privilege of photographing one of the most beautiful weddings I have ever been to! Of course, I am a little biased on this one - it was my best friend getting married. We have been side by side for graduations, babies being born, heartaches, etc. so I can't imagine being anywhere else than right by her side on her special day! The weather was beautiful - the church was amazing (Historic Veto Church in Elkmont, AL) and to top it all off, she had the most handsome ring bearer (my son) :) Jana and Ian... I wish you a lifetime of happiness and love and I can't wait to see what the future holds! I love you both!

What's Happening at S.E.P....

It's that time of year again! Noses will be running and tears will be flowing, but not because of the pollen! Momma's everywhere are about to witness their babies (no matter the age) moving on to new adventures in their lives! I have already survived my oldest graduating high school AND college, but now my baby, MY BABY, is about to "graduate" kindergarten! Well, of course we had to take a picture :) So, if your little one (preschool, kindergarten, etc.) missed his portrait opportunity for his/her cap & gown, schedule a session today! Also, from now until June 21, Canvas's are 30% off! This is a BIG savings, so take advantage of it today! This is valid on past session reprints or new sessions!

Blessed!

I am so humbled and honored to be able to have the job I do! Sometimes you just know that God sets your path up for you - you may get discouraged along the way, but He gives you signs that you are doing what you are supposed to be doing. This is my cousin, Allison Mitchell, and she and I talked about that this week while we were doing some headshots for her ministry that she is just getting started. Allison and her family are very special to me and I just know God is going to do great things through her! If your church/ladies group is looking for a speaker, contact Allison, you are sure to be blessed!

She said yes!

Wedding season is in full bloom! Love is in the air! I had the honor of shooting this sweet couple's engagement session and am looking forward to their wedding in July! I first met Jessica when she worked at The Family Dollar Store in Ardmore... my 3(at the time) year old always ate off of her plate. We were instant friends! These two have quickly become one of my favorite couples! You can see the love they have for each other and I just know their marriage is going to be full of blessings for them both! The place they chose for their session was special to them because its where they both hunt - they have many memories on that land - including - where Zeb proposed! This was a recreation of the proposal (to see more of this session, "like" my facebook page). I am in awe at every session knowing that one day their great-grandchildren will be looking at the photographs that I am taking today! (Look for a blog in the near future about the value of prints versus digital files :) ) I love my job!

Color me happy!

I was "attending" a webinar last week on senior photography and this was a website the speaker recommended to help seniors (and families, etc.) in picking out outfits - you just click on a color and it gives you the colors that would complement it well! http://colorschemedesigner.com/

Coming soon!

I keep telling myself I am going to do better about posting on here - and I have been trying for about a week now to post, but was having technical issues - so I changed computers (and if you are reading this - success!). The best place to get the most up to date information and "sneak peaks" is my Facebook page ("like" at the link to the right). I had the pleasure of doing a wedding this past weekend and the weather was GORGEOUS - especially for February! We hadn't planned on doing outdoor shots, but how can you resist a beautiful sunset and a lake!?
I have a lot of plans coming up - especially involving mini sessions - and if you are reading this, you have an EXCLUSIVE scoop on three new mini sessions I will be offering! I just ordered 3 new backdrops and I've already received my shipment confirmation! One is going to be a candy shop mini session (which is going to go along perfect with my NEW table I just bought!), another is going to be a superhero mini session, and the third one (not necessarily in that order) is going to be a "Graffiti" mini session - I'm not sure how to describe it much more than that for now... so keep an eye out on here and on my Facebook page for upcoming events!
Oh! This is a little far in advance, but I will also have artwork in an upcoming art show, so be on the look out for more information on that too!
